GAME: Game & Anime Music Emotions
Review by Tom Good
Piano Squall, a.k.a. Michael Gluck, just released his debut CD, featuring his piano arrangements of anime and video game music. I have heard Mr. Gluck perform several times at anime conventions, and he is always a hit with the crowd. This CD contains 18 songs, including themes from popular anime such as Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, InuYasha, and Cowboy Bebop. The video game themes come mainly from the Final Fantasy series, though he also includes one of my favorite old-school themes from Super Mario World.
The arrangements sound so natural on the piano that to anyone unfamiliar with the original material, it would just seem like interesting new piano compositions. That's one of the things I like best about it. You can play it for anime and gaming fans who will smile at the references, but anyone who likes the sound of the piano will enjoy it too. The music really stands on its own.
The CD is a bargain at $9.99, with free shipping in the U.S., and proceeds benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. It is available online at pianosquall.com.
